The Beautiful Game Back in Barbados

post

Sports enthusiasts, football fanatics and sun worshippers alike should head to Barbados from 26-27 May 2012 to witness former legends of the game tackle it out in a legends tournament at Kensington Oval, Barbados.

Now in its second year, the Barbados British Airways Football Legends Invitational will feature eight English six-a-side teams including; Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers and a PFA all-star team. With the competitive spirit riding high at last year’s tournament, each captain has his eyes on reigning champions Manchester United’s trophy.

Former football legends already signed up to pack their football boots include Alan Shearer, Gaizka Mendieta, Dennis Wise, Roberto Di Matteo, Andrew Cole and ‘Player of the Tournament’ in 2011 Gianfranco Zola.

The tournament will once again attract an enormous crowd of both British football fans visiting the country and local Bajans, who are just as avid in their support of the game.

Ex-Newcastle and England captain Alan Shearer is already looking forward to returning to Barbados:

“Last year was fantastic – great football and wonderful hospitality. All the lads are really looking forward to returning to Barbados this year and we can promise an entertaining couple of days for everyone who turns out again to support the tournament.”

Barbados Tourism Authority’s vice president marketing and sales UK, Petra Roach added: “Last year it made me so proud to see our stunning Kensington Oval filled with my fellow Barbadians and British fans, families and holidaymakers all cheering on their favourite team. The fact that so many of them are coming back to play once again goes a long way to show what a fantastic tournament and a fabulous time everyone had in Barbados.

We are nation of sporting heroes and fanatics so it is fitting that 2012 is our Year of Sport; from grassroots to world class and I am thrilled to be able to show off our fantastic sporting facilities and of course our legendary hospitality. Also, the tickets are just BDS$20 / £7, so it really is a tournament open to everyone”

Christian Smith, commercial director of the Professional Footballers’ Association commented: “Once again, thanks to the invaluable contribution of the Barbados Tourism Authority, British Airways and of course our members, we are looking forward to an exciting return to the Kensington Oval in May. The success of last years’ event has captured the imagination of a host of potential new players to the tournament as well as ensuring the return of the stars of 2011.”

Colm Lacy, British Airways’ head of commercial, Gatwick, said: “We are delighted to be continuing our sponsorship of the Barbados British Airways Football Legends Invitational. Last year’s inaugural event was a huge success and this year is set to be even better. The Caribbean is a very important destination for British Airways and we have a long and proud history of serving the region.”
